Chiangmai Thai

One of the great things about living in longview is the every changing array of restaurants. New ones open every month and others close about as often. Not all are fantastic but many are worth a try... I mean hey what else are you going to do tonight?
About 6 months ago with no fan fair Chiangmai Thai opened in a strip mall behind the AT&T store. I was luck to spot is and have visited several occasions.
The food is variable based on how busy, the day or the week and who is cooking. The prices are reasonable and the food is fairly fast.
Their wait staff is unique, all brand new servers who have no experience in food service and who know nothing about Thai food. A true experience every time, but one that I honestly enjoy.
Two negatives that I would feel remiss not mentioning: If its a dish that comes with rice you will need an additional side as the rice potion is too small. Secondly last week when we went in a cockroach was spotted scurrying across the wall in the dining area.

Lake Houston Campground

One of the great things about Texas is its never too cold to camp, there is however a 4 month time frame when its quite hot and camping is less than desirable.

From the Longview/ Kilgore area you are about 4 hours from downtown Houston, however you can reach the City park of Lake Houston in about 3hours. This park is located on the northern most part of Houston and is a great stop on your way to the Houston Airport that is also situated in the norther part of the Houston.

Unlike many city parks this one has overnight camping including a full bath house.
They also have family style bunk cabins for rent, along with indoor and outdoor pavilions.
I did not venture too far onto the trails but the whole area has that back woods bayou meets pines feel that is unique to this part of the county.

Henderson TX Rodeo

It'll drive a cowboy crazy
It'll drive the man insane
And he'll sell off everything he owns
Just to pay to play the game
And a broken home and some broken bones
Is all he'll have to show
For all the years that he spent chasin'
This dream they call rodeo
Well it's bulls and blood, it's dust and mud
It's the roar of a Sunday crowd, it's the white in his knuckles
The gold in the buckle, he'll win the next go 'round
It's boots and chaps, it's cowboy hats
It's spurs and latigo, it's the ropes and the reins
And the joy and the pain and they call the thing rodeo
It's the broncs and the blood
It's the steers and the mud
And they call the thing rodeo
 Garth Brooks - Rodeo Lyrics

I don't know if anything else needed to be said. If you are living, visiting or passing through East Texas a trip to the Rodeo is a must do on your list. The Henderson Rodeo is a family Rodeo (that means no smoking, no swearing and no alcohol). As an added bonus their rodeo arena is somewhat enclosed keeping the cool night air and the bugs at bay. And of course you will get a satisfying dose of Texas pride, cowboys and true blue patriotism.

Discrimination overlooked

Discrimination masked by talented young women.

Kilgore Tx, a town that has passed its prime but still holds much charm was once one of America's great oil boom-towns, home of the world's richest acre. 75 years ago Killgore College the Jr college in this little Texas town struck gold in a more metaphorical sense. Seeing the challenge of a town built around the male-dominated oil industry a new fine art form was introduced to attract a different type of person to Kilgore. Introducing the Kilgore Rangerettes. A group of young women who are top dance drill members who come together for two intense years of study sprinkled with high profile performances and football half time shows. When this concept was born in 1939 it was the birth of an art form that has grown in popularity throughout the world.

Last evening I had the opportunity to go watch the Rangerettes perform and their talent was apparent but equally apparent was the discrimination happening within the drill team, the community and the college.

Gregg county where Kilgore College is located has about 22% of its population identifying as African American, about 15% who identify as Hispanic, 1% who identify as other and the remaining are identified as Caucasian. As with most of the United States, about 51% of the population is women and 49% men.

The KC Rangerettes are comprised of approximately 60 members, 2 coaches/ directors, 7 choreographers and 6 mangers. Of these 70+ individuals 2 maybe 3 would be identified as African American. No directors, no choreographers and no dancers were male, all of the managers were.

While this composition and inequality within the Rangerettes performance a larger level of discrimination has me truly upset and disgusted with our society that turns a blind eye.

Pictured below is the Rangerettes on-campus housing.

And here is Athletic on-campus housing. The KC football team has approximately 60 members 43 of whom would be identified as African American

The photos can't capture the difference, on the street where the Rangerettes reside, practice and perform the landscaping is well maintained and aesthetically pleasing, the street is repaired, the sidewalks clear of debris. Less than 5 blocks away the football team lives in on a street that has little landscaping, poorly maintained roads, and debris is left on the sidewalks.

This entire situation is a problem, inequality and discrimination are occurring daily at this local Jr College as the administrative staff and the community that supports them allow for policies to prevails that create such dramatic divides between groups of people.

Art and antlers - another East Texas gem

Sunday, March 30, 2014 4:00 am | Updated: 7:42 am, Sun Mar 30, 2014.

By Richard Yeakley ryeakley@news-journal.com

After more than a quarter century making furniture, lighting and sculptures with horns and antlers, Jeff White considers himself a craftsman.

White, the owner of White Oak’s Little Big Horns, crafts each piece that leaves his workroom by hand, sacrificing quantity to be able to give a personal seal of approval to each piece.

“It’s not just a job for me, it’s a craft. It’s making something,” he said. “I am excited about making something that (makes) people go ‘wow.’ ”

And “wow” people have gone.

Since leaving the hair cutting profession in 1988 to begin crafting furniture with one of his clients, White’s work has — through word of mouth — found its way into the homes and properties of Ross Perot, Ted Turner, Jay Novacek, Ed Belfour, Larry Gatlin and Sharon Young of Sharon Young Clothing/Sharon Young Stores.

It also has been featured in magazines such as D Magazine, Country Home Magazine and Architectural Digest Magazine, and been featured on “Extreme Home Makeover” on ABC.

His career took him from Dallas to Fredericksburg and to White Oak, where he works from his home without a store front, selling online, made-to-order pieces.

Most recently, the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City agreed to purchase his original sculptures.

“Rich people aren’t rich because they are lucky. They are smart and pretty savvy,” he said. “They know the worth of something, what the fair market value of things are. … These billionaires like that reuse me to reorder as their properties grow, as their houses enlarge. The reason they call me back, because they know … I am not a price gouger.”

In his early days, Jeff split his time making the artwork and gathering the antlers to use.

Because many animals shed their antlers, White would make trips to the Rocky Mountains and the Grand Teton National Park and walk trails picking up antlers.

Later, he formed relationships with people who gathered antlers and sold them to international markets and to craftsmen around the nation.

White said a part of his success throughout the years had been his timing for getting into the business.

“The concept has been around for thousands of year, but the look nationwide was brand new,” he said. “Back then, a ranch could constitute 10 acres; now we could get antler chandeliers. It exploded and within a matter of years ... I had made friends with some of these big players.”

Because he now operates without a store front, White said it was the work of Alan Strickland of Alan Strickland Photography and Chris McNabb of Key Creative, a website design firm, that gives him a global presence.

“It is only by these people that I look good,” he said.

White builds chandeliers, furniture, lamps, mirrors, knives and other items.

When he took off in January 1991, White opened a permanent showroom in Dallas in the Dallas Market Center and in a week took more than $25,000 worth of orders.

White can be reached by phone at (903) 297-2222 for distributor, retail, decorator or private price list.

His work station is at 1104 Idlewood Drive in White Oak.

Little Free Library

Little Library

The Little Free Library is a project I simply adore. Learn more at http://littlefreelibrary.org/

The city of Kilgore has taken this project on and several of the local parks now are home to little libraries!

My neighborhood park, Drillers Park, has one of these and i stop by and check it several times a week. While this is a recent addition to our community is looks as if its getting a decent start with a rotation of a variety of book. If your moving to Kilgore I would highly suggest finding the location closest to you and making it part of your weekly Kilgore Experience!

Our Additions to Kilgore little library

The little library project is on of the coolest community based education movements I have encountered.  Ian saw this great post on dump a day where they added googley eyes to classic fiction. We instantly knew we needed to do something similar and add it to our neighborhoods little library. Not having an abundance of classic fiction to donate we went to our star book shelf and had these great creations as a result.

Glamping in east Texas - Cooper Lake State Park

Just under 2 hours drive from Kilgore Tx, we visited yet another gem in the Texas state parks system. Cooper State Park. With two units, one on the north end and one on the south end of the lake. We came upon the north end and were impressed with the friendly staff, clean facilities and well maintained trails.

The fall colors during a morning hike down by the lake gave us a glimpse some rare and wonderful colors.

At $25 a night you get a screened shelter with a fan and overhead light. Just dreamy and a great way to "camp" during a major storm system.

Texas Tea Room

Carthage Tx is a must visit town during your East Texas vacation. A historic little town with the quintessential downtown plaza square. On this square you find a lovely park and gazebo in the center opposed to the court houses that so many others have. the shops around the square have your typical: CPA, Printing and other not so interesting locations but you will find a used clothing shop, a very stylish new clothing shop, a clothing shop that also installs speakers in your car and the Texas Tea Room.

The Texas Tea room is in a historic building that shows off its charm. Exposed original walls, restrooms with parlors, outdoor tables and an appetizing menu make this a top choice for your afternoon in Carthage.

I would encourage you to stay the night, eat dinner at jalapeno tree and rent the Jack Black movie Bernie just to ensure you take in the full potential of the town.

I have been told the country music museum is a great time and hopefully my next trip down I can give it a visit.

Chianti Restaurant

Yum. Every ounce of me loved this restaurant. An hour from East Texas in a neighborhood of highly rated restaurants you find Chianti. On Friday night we had a wonderful dinner of delectable northern Italian fare. Accompanied by a live singer and pianist, fantastic wait staff and an overall sense of just want one wants in an Italian dinner date.  Trip advisor was spot on in their assessment of Chaianti, the best Italian i have found in the US outside of  little Italy Manhattan. If you are living in East Texas it is well worth your time to travel over for dinner at Chianti.

Volunteering in East Texas

This blog started as a way to track our volunteering while overseas and volunteer we did, than returned to the US and started to work for non profits and really have had limited energy to write about volunteering when our lives have been consumed by the non profit sector. All that said I did want to make mention of the 6 month search I went on to find a volunteer opportunity in the Longview/ Kilgore area.

I e-mailed several leads, even stopped at the animal shelter but nothing really seemed to want me, that is until I approached the Kilgore Downtown Development team and they had me join with open arms. I am now trying to do what I can to launch a small business social media strategy to increase business in our historic down town. I did some support for our local comic store and am looking forward to continuing to build the project over the upcoming months!

Moral of the story is with lots of searching and trying you will find something that needs your talent and will give you a volunteer experience here in east Texas.

Atlanta Tx state park

I journey to Atlanta State Park in Atlanta TX. I had been warned that it was not worth my time, but I could not keep away.

The Pros:

  • Lots of trails, you will not hike every trail in one day
  • Great staff
  • lovely forest
  • has lake access
The Cons:
  • Poorly marked trails, I went miles out of my way on the nature trail?!?!?!
  • The lakefront is not very well maintained.
  • Most of the trails are in the woods and lack wow factors.
  • The rustic restrooms that I encountered were overrun by wasps.

Overall opinion, if your in the area and want to get away for a while its a lovely place to do that, however it is not worth a trip out to visit.

Longview Tx Farmers Market

For over a month now I have had the joy of the downtown Longview Saturday farmers market. While a far cry from those in NY, NJ it fills me with happiness as I journey through the 7 or 8 booths each week gathering fresh local produce, cheese and eggs.

Great deals are hard to find, however excellent in quality, long lasting and full of flavor. This last week I filled my basket with thai goat cheese,
yellow beans, snap peas, egg plant, potatoes, jalapenos and cucumbers. Supplemented with collard greens and cilantro from our garden we have been eating well for the past few days.

Today I discovered that the Fairground Farmers Market has opened for the season and I scored my first peaches of the year! The Fairground Farmers Market is tucked back and a bit hard to see, but go to the fairgrounds, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 8am and noon and you should be able to find it. Its a true gem if you are new to the area and looking for some spectacular inspiration. Tonight for desert we had peach pie with a gram cracker crust YUM!

Daingerfield State Park

We bought ourselves a Texas State Park Pass one of our first weekends here and have been making a point to visit as many parks as we can.

Daingerfield has a fantastic path around that lake, with picturesque bridges and lovely lake views.
