Century Training In Eastern Texas

My life has gone through some dramatic shifts and my training has gone way down. But I am still committed to doing a century this upcoming summer and have begun my training again.

Last week I did four 30 min general work outs at the Parks Recreation Center in Kilgore Tx, stair steppers, elliptical, walking track, free weights, chess press, shoulder press,  and some sort of row machine.

I have been working on some basic flexibility/ yoga over the past two weeks as well, with a  30 min warm up routine each morning before work, nothing crazy but just keeping me limber(ish)

Yesterday I did a 5 mile hike at Tyler State Park. Wonderful day to be outside, I love this time of year in Texas!

Today I got back on the bike and did a 5 mile ride (you can see my route here), not the most enjoyable ride every but it felt good to be back on a bike.

This week I am going to try to do this strength training workout at the gym after work(I am trying not to ride in the dark for safety reasons)

Warm Up:
Slow-Mo Overhead Throw (4 times):

Start standing with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms down by sides. Slowly sweep arms out in front of you and then overhead, reaching arms back as if throwing something over your head behind you. Allow lower back to arch and hips to press forward as arms reach overhead. Repeat this 4 times.
Waist Twists (4 times):
Start standing with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms extended out in front of your chest, palms facing in. Keeping hips facing forward, slowly open right arm behind you, looking back over right shoulder, twisting through upper body only. Untwist slowly back to starting position and then repeat to the left. Alternate twisting sides, 2 times on each side.
Add a Knee Lift (4 times):
Repeat the standing waist twists, and as you turn upper body to the right, draw your right knee up and forward, balancing on the left leg. Slowly untwist and repeat to left, drawing left knee up. Alternate twisting sides, 2 times on each side.
Land Swimming (16 counts):
Start standing with feet hip-width apart; bring arms up in front of chest, palms facing down. Draw your abs in tight. Make a large circle with your right arm from the front to the back of the body, as if doing a swim stroke. As the right arm comes under and back to the front, start the left arm circle back. Allow knees to bend and as you get into your groove with the movement, build up your speed and depth of the knee bend using your legs to also help propel the circle. Repeat this for 16 counts.

The Workout:
Narrow Squat & Overhead Press (16 reps)

Start standing with feet together; toes pointed forward, one dumbbell in each hand. Bend elbows keeping them in close to your torso, and bring dumbbells up to shoulder level, with palms facing in to body. Squat back into hips, squeezing inner thighs together to keep knees touching as they bend, knees behind toes. Stand up out of squat as you press your arms overhead, rotating your palms away from you, pressing dumbbells to the ceiling, being careful not to lock out your elbow or knee joints as you press. That’s one rep. Repeat 16 times total.
Plie Squat & Curl Twist (16 reps)
Step feet wider than hip width apart, with toes rotated out slightly about 45 degrees, a dumbbell in each hand. Bend knees, tracking them over toes and hold plie position, making sure to keep knees rotated out over toes, not buckling in. Bring right arm in front of body and the left arm behind your left hip, turning upper body slightly to the left. Then, curl both arms up, bending elbows in by ribs and stopping dumbbells at about armpit level (don’t let the weights touch your body), while turning body straight ahead. As you lower arms, reach the left arm in front, right arm behind hip and turn torso to the right. That’s one rep. Repeat 16 times total, alternating sides each time.
Triceps Extension & Side Lunge (16 reps)
Start with feet wider than hip width apart, with elbows bent and pulled in close by ribs, a dumbbell in each hand.Hinge forward from the hips, bringing chest towards the floor, bending knees slightly, and keeping back straight. Lunge into right leg as you extend and straighten your arms back behind you, palms facing in, reaching knuckles back to the wall behind you. Bend elbows and straighten right leg. That’s one rep. Repeat 16 times total, alternating sides each time.
Rear Row Plank (16 reps)
Start on the ground, on all fours, with one dumbbell in each hand. Holding onto the dumbbells, extend legs out into a wide V, and bring body into a top of a push up position. Row your right arm by bending elbow and lifting the right dumbbell off the floor and bringing it up to the outside of your ribcage. Lower the right arm back to the floor, being careful not to slam the weight down. That’s one rep. Repeat 16 times, alternating arms each time. If the plank is too difficult to hold, keep knees on the ground as you row.
Chest Press & Side Knee Drop (16 reps)
Lie down on your back, with a dumbbell in each hand, and lift feet off the floor, bringing knees together bent at a 90-degree angle, and arms extended straight up over chest, palms facing away from your head. Keep your abs drawn in tight. Bend arms at a 90-degree angle with your arms open out to the sides of your shoulders (do not let your elbows touch the ground) as you turn both knees towards the right at about a 2 o’clock position. As you press arms back up straight over chest, draw knees back into a 12 o’clock position. Repeat press, dropping knees to an 11 o’clock position.  Repeat 16 times total, alternating knee drop sides each time.
Push Ups with Quad Reach Workout
Start with feet wide, at the top of a push up position (plank). Do a push up, keeping body in a straight line as you lower being careful not to let your hips sag, and abs tight. Return to plank position, and lift right leg off the floor trying to keep your body as still and steady as possible.  Lower leg and repeat push up. Hold plank and lift left leg. Lower and repeat, then lift right arm, reaching out and front by your ear, palm facing down. Repeat push up and lift left arm. Do 16 push- ups in total, alternating the leg lifts and arm raises. This is a tough move, so if you need to, modify your push-ups on bent knees and then stay on knees for the arm or leg raise.

Century Training Week 7

Things are off to a much better start this week. Thought I would share my bike trip maps with you, just in case I have any followers in the area who want to give the trip a go =)

8 Mile trip : https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?authuser=0&ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=205365277646822574271.0004cba564ab050f5ffeb&mid=1349811541 (as a side note this ends up close to 9 but i tell myself its 8)

Monday : 8 Mile ride - trying to improve my speed but only seemed to improve my level if gears biked in. Also making a focused effort to keep peddling when going down hill, not using that as a break time.

Tuesday:  Lazy

Wednesday: Lazy

Thursday: 8 Mile Ride - just about died twice on today's trip. The roads were very busy, the dust was thick and many people were in too much of a hurry to slow down for me. I really wish i had safer places to train.

Friday: 3 Mile Ride - just a perfect day, however my whole self was exhausted and my butt was a bit sore from taking a week off

Sat: Lazy - did pick up some more reflectors today, trying to stay as visible as possible in the dust clouds.

Sunday: Cross training 3 mile walk

And this week I have several reflector advertisers to share with you if you want to increase your viability.

Century Training Week 5

Monday: 5 miles, 1.5 to work 1.5 home 3 after work and a 1.5 miles walking to the mall, Wendy's and wal-mart

Tuesday: Cross training and rest, Walked home from the mall and than ate Mexican food and sleeping.

Wednesday: 5 Miles, Trying to use today to push my muscles and time I spent this ride two gears higher than I traditionally do and made a point to keep peddling even when gravity was in my favor. I hit a few snags however and my actual time did not improve. First due to the drought the roads are very dusty and today for whatever reason the oil traffic was out in full force. For a mile + on this ride I could barley see 20 feet in front of me due to the dust clouds and breathing was a horrid experience, needless to say i slowed down significantly as I navigated this oil truck dust storm. The second snag was about 4 block from my house when avoiding construction activity I hit something and popped my tire. The result was having to walk the bike home and not sure what tomorrow will bring.

Thursday: Cross training 2.5 miles walking, With my tire still out of service and not time to repair it and get some exercise I opted to do a 2.5 mile walk. Not the same muscle group but building the legs none the less.

Friday: Cross training, 20 min of P90X yoga feeling excellent and noticing the strength in my legs is improving.

Saturday: 20 Miles, Goal 30 Miles, new tire on and 3.5 miles down the highway I get a flat again, back to the bike shop, second time this morning and with a new tire on I am trying a new route around lake Patterson  2.5 miles from my house to the Patterson lake campground, through the campground, onto the railroad access road to the traps man club on 115th. Lovely path along the south western side of the lake, up past the model airplanes club area and onto to 116th street. This bike trail was a 2006 Boy scout project that is now under management of the Dickinson parks and Recreation Department in collaboration with the badlands bike club. this first 3 miles really made me excited to be using the mountain bike as it was designed and to be off the roads and away from the oil trucks. Everything quickly went down hill the trail was gone, I was chest deep in grasses, and I had plunged a good 45 min in this till i hit a hidden log and realized i was in over my head, another 30 min of walking my bike back to the road and having to climb though a barbwire fence I was very grateful to be back on the road. Not exactly sure where I was I headed towards Dickinson Skyline and 9.2 miles latter I had made it home.

Sunday: 3 miles, cross training 1 mile walking. Walk in the morning to loosen up after yesterdays horrid trip, found a lost dog and returned it during this walk. Biked to and from work.

Century Training Week 4

Having over 6 months to get ready was an excellent decision.

This past week I did two 8.2mile days and today knocked out a 16miler. The 8.2 pushed me but were not to bad, I did start to encroach on darkness biking after work and put a headlamp on my helmet (great decision)

The 16mile ride today was excellent, it kicked my ass on the hills but overall I think that I will be able to do 30 miles next weekend. The downside to today's ride is it took me about an hour and a half, so that's about 10 miles an hour and the average time it looks for a century is 6hrs, thus i need to bump up my speed to about 17mph.

This week done, next week I am going to do some more 5milers and work on bumping up my speed. I have also taken to doing some excellent stretching post ride which i feel has really helped me prevent injuries.

First 3 weeks of training

If anyone has been following along I apologies my blogging has been almost as dedicated as my training. Almost is the key here.

After a good start with biking to work and I have biked to work about 5 times over the last two weeks. One day about a week and a half ago I went to the gym prepared to do my first long ride of the training. I had 15miles on my mind when I walked in and I was prepared. However 2 miles into my ride my knee started to have intense pain and i pushed through for another mile. Being unable to stand the pain i switched type of stationary bike and did another painful mile. Giving up on the bike I went to the treadmill and walked a final mile, totaling 5 miles for the day. Super bummed I slowly walked back to my apartment and iced my keen while trying to find the cause. Self diagnosis, i had the seat a bit to high and was using my toes more than I should have putting strain on my knee mussel.

Two days of pain and ice before I was back in go mode. I went to the swimming pool and did 30min of laps to help build the muscle group back with almost zero impact. That was a very good choice and I was back on the bike within two days.

Over the past week I have been doing 5 mile rides that are lovely, even if the oil trucks make things a bit dusty, just being on the back roads has been excellent.

Biking North Dakota
Goal for this week bump the 5milers up to 8mile rides and if the weather turns to get a gym pass and do leg training  I am not quite ready to get back on a stationary bike, I read many horror stories after my knee a few weeks ago and think that I want much stronger legs before I try the bike again.

Training for a century!

Working towards my goal .... nothing too crazy yet, a few bike rides to and from work, making a point to get out walking regularly and hope to get some good riding/ hiking done this weekend. Not being sure if the hike/ walk part of my life really has any impact i did some reading and found this

... provide some variety to your workout. Even more variety can be found in mountain biking or roller riding. This is important, because if training gets boring, it most likely gets less intense and possibly less frequent. So don't be afraid to try something new, even if that means competing in a USCF event or even a triathlon. Cross-training is also a bonus for distance cycling because overall body fitness is the key to fighting fatigue in long events. My weekly schedule includes running, hiking, weight lifting, Tae Kwon Do, racquetball, and ultimate frisbee and I am convinced this is an asset to me on the bike....(http://www.adventurecorps.com/way/dctrain.html)

The person who wrote this has done a double century, I think I can trust this advice =) During the same search I found this, that I think I will implement in September, way more than 10 weeks out, but if I can build up to it sooner why not =)

Century Training Days 3 and 4

Back from my wedding and starting back up with my training for a century. I spoke with my brother who told me that when he was first training he was doing time not distance(which i am doing) and told me that once he switched to distance he made much greater gains... so at some point ill have to make that shift. I am not mentally ready for that as of now however.

The first day back, day three of my training I had absoultly zero desire to get back on a bike, but knowing i had to do something i went for a brisk mile and a half walk ... but its something

Today i work myself up bright and early and biked to work, it was slightly chilly, my fingers got  bit cold but overall it was great!

Two days towards my century

My youngest brother is training for an iron man, and while that is something that i have zero interest in I do enjoy a good bike ride. While looking at the non profit sector in Maine I came across the lobster ride and though I can do the short one and he could do the long one, and it would be something we can do together, like a bonding activity =) I facebooked this idea to him and he called a few days latter to tell me point blank that i should do the century with him, i have a whole year to train .... true point. I am leaving for my destination wedding on Thursday so don't have much time to get started, but i figured why not start now. My goal is to bike for an hour every day between now and than .... the real goal is most likely to bike 6 hours a week, and perhaps when spring come around ill up that once i can bike outside again.

Day 1: Not bad, the traffic and lack of bikeable area in the town is crap, however the West River Community Center has a decent loop around it that i did 5 or 6 times. I went all out on this one, even using Ians I pod for some tunes.... i enjoyed the tunes, the ear buds made my ears hurt.... will have to find a better solution as time passes on.

Day 2: My but hurts, my legs are tired and I only made it 30 min
